Verge Magazine is Looking for New Writers

24 May

Verge magazine, North America’s resource for working, studying and volunteering abroad, is always looking for new writers who have something new, interesting and unique to say about studying abroad. If you have a unique story to tell, well-earned advice to share or valuable insight into emerging trends in the field, we want to hear about them!

As purveyors of travel with a purpose, we want to hear about people being citizens of the world in a way that encourages social responsibility, cross-cultural understanding or sustainable development. And, of course, we want those stories to be told in a narrative and well-told format that includes plenty of anecdotes, quotations and informative (i.e. researched!) context.

If you’d like to contribute to Verge, start by checking out the magazine online at www.vergemagazine.ca and reading up on what’s already been discussed. Then you can figure out if you have something new to offer, and pitch it to us by emailing contributing@vergemagazine.ca. (Make sure to consult our contributor’s guidelines first, though: http://www.vergemagazine.com/verge-magazine-contact-us/contributing.html. They include important information on what we’re looking for and how we pay for content.)

Of course, if you’re looking for something less competitive or with a smaller word count, we are always looking for pieces for our Verge Storyboard, which gets published online once a week and promoted through our Facebook and Twitter pages. Articles for this are unpaid.

The Institute for Education in International Media (ieiMedia) is now accepting applications for summer media programs in France, Italy and Turkey.

We’d love to have students from Kwantlen….

Students spend four weeks studying international reporting and media skills (multimedia, video or magazine) and reporting on the host community. They then create a publication (website, magazine or book) about the city. The programs are open to English-speaking students from all colleges and universities, as well as recent graduates. Preference given journalism, media or mass communication majors and students with experience on a college or professional publication.

Urbino lies in the northern part of central Italy’s Marche Region, nestled between the Apennine Mountains and the Adriatic Sea. Students will live and learn at the University of Urbino, with all meals included. Students who sign up for the magazine publishing project will produce Urbino Now, a digital English-language magazine. Those who sign up for Multimedia Reporting will study photography, international reporting and video and produce a website about the city. For examples of previous student projects see InUrbino.net and Urbino Now magazine.

Students will study blogging, shooting and editing video, and international reporting and create a multimedia website about the community. Perpignan lies in the Languedoc region of southwestern France, 8 miles west of the Mediterranean Sea and 19 miles north of the Spanish border, within sight of the Pyrenees.  Students will live in air-conditioned studios in a modern hotel and study French at a respected language academy. TURKEY: Istanbul (Academic partners: San Francisco State University/Winston-Salem State University)

Student Exchanges

17 Sep

The newest student in our class of second-year students is Paul Fleischanderl, here as part of our exchange agreement with FH-Wien, in Vienna, Austria. During this semester, Paul is taking News Production and Chad Skelton’s Research Techniques classes.

While Paul is studying here, two Kwantlen students are taking a semester of classes at FH-Wien — Nathalie Heiberg-Harrison and Thomas Miller, both fourth-year students. Nathalie and Thomas are the latest of almost half-a-dozen students who have done study semesters in Vienna.

Alicia-Rae Light is also overseas this semester, living in London, England, and taking music journalism classes at the University of Creative Arts. Alicia-Rae is the first student to attend UCA, after we reached agreement for student exchanges with the journalism department there earlier this year.

The department is looking into other opportunities for exchange agreements with overseas universities, including one in Australia. And, we are actively exploring the possibility of linking our students and students in overseas universities for joint journalism projects. We are currently discussing one such project, involving music journalism students at UCA, for Spring 2011.
